Invisible Fiends: Mr Mumbles by Barry Hutchison

I’m not a fan of being scared for obvious reasons but Mr Mumbles does it so well it was worth the sleepless night just to read it. The first in a series of 6 books sees young Kyle living with his mum, dad mysteriously absent and gran “losing her marbles” to put not too fine a point on the subject. Enter into this domestic scene a stormy night, Kyle left alone in the house whilst mum takes gran back home and an eery scratching which seems to be coming from the attic…

Of course Kyle checks it out thus finding a drawing of his imaginary friend from when he was much younger. Kyle’s forgotten all about Mr Mumbles, who he invented when he struggled with talking. Like all imaginary friends, Mr Mumbles was cast aside, forgotten, unwanted as Kyle grew up. Mr Mumbles didn’t like this. Not one little bit. He’s back. And he wants revenge.

Kyle finds himself running for his life with the plot taking unexpected and mysterious turns none of which I will give away here for fear of spoiling the story. But I will say this…Kyle’s mum has some explaining to do!

Clever, scary, refreshingly different not only in plot but in style, this is a series you simply must start. Just make sure you apologise to your imaginary friend when you’ve finished.
